Proposed Revisions
-
Drop banner men -
Drop question marks and animate bus in bubble with peds getting on -
Articulate the foot in the road for the first crossing. -
Repeat the foot in the road from pedestrians perspective, and repeat the foot in the road from the driver's perspective. -
Alternate image of intersection with marked crosswalk and with unmarked crosswalk with "=" in between. -
Remove the cloud/puff of smoke after each character's crown appears. It should be used as a transitional effect as it has been done for the bannermen and carpet.-Matt -
Crowns need to be clearer. Bigger? Like Matt's suggestion of getting rid of cloud/puff of smoke -
Ditto on dropping question marks and animating bus -
Add an exclamation point in the white cloud of thought above the mom when she indicates interest in crossing the street to get to the bus.(PBOT) -
Lane glow for center lane should be removed from north side, but present on south side. -
Establishing right-of-way. Wonder if it having initial first step into street in same frame as foot on brake would facilitate clearer understanding for viewer. Have had a few people suggest this...said foot in street unclear. Maybe by connecting foot in street to immediate foot on brake will help. -
"Stop" on stop sign -
Red carpet adjustment in dream scene. -
Cut from :23 to :33 to remove the check step and dream sequence. -
Slow the cars to a stop, instead of screeching halt as they approach the pedestrians. -
Remove mask and spotlight to shift focus away from peds and onto the cars during the crossing. -
Freeze at lanes 2 and 4. Mark head and tail with arrows to emphasize lane allowance. -
Dissolve tail of carpet and momentary flash of green as lane clears, signaling the car to continue.(LCC) -
Mark lane allowance with arrows near the cars and lanes, not up near the pedestrians. -
Replace the splash with two intersections with a single intersection on which the crosswalk fades in and out twice. -
Slowing of ped in crosswalk as they approach each new lane, articulating head - looking for approaching traffic. -
Perspective change clarifying that it is safe for ped to step into killing zone. Perspective from inside the vehicle looking at a distant ped. Ideally this is about one Portland block (200 feet).
Deferred Revisions
- Pass pedestrian from driver's perspective, then view foot coming out into road from drivers perspective with decelerate to stop.
- Showing "vision wavelengths" from the pedestrian to the driver could convey the importance of the pedestrian making eye contact with drivers and looking before you cross and continuing to look while you cross. (PBOT)
- It was also suggested that one of the vehicle drivers in one of the middle lanes could fail to stop for the pedestrians and run through the intersection. The next vehicle going through the intersection could be a police car with their siren on and a notation of $360 fine for failure to yield to the pedestrian. (PBOT)
- On first image of intersection with marked crosswalk and unmarked crosswalk with "=" in between, make the marked crosswalks pulsate.
Positioning
-
Move the bus stop so that the back end of the bus, when stopped, is not in the crossing area.(PBOT) -
Move the mom and child so they are on the corner and not away from the corner when ready to cross the street.(PBOT) -
The pavement markings should stop at the front end of the crossing in-line with the adjacent property boundary and not extend to the outside edge of the crossing next to the intersection.(PBOT)
Crossing Flow
-
The first pedestrians should all stop before they cross the first lane of traffic and possibly subsequent lanes of traffic to look at oncoming traffic and make sure the cars in the adjacent lane see him/her and have stopped before proceeding forward.(PBOT)
First impressions of Act 1
"The first crossing looks like a teacher going to school. Are those crossing guards? Are the pedestrians waiting for crossing guards?" --Anonymous
"I watched the piece a couple of times, and I think it is trying to say that cars need to yield to pedestrians no matter what, even if there is no crosswalk. It's pretty cute, and it's definitely a clear message, but it's not obvious at first. Maybe there could be a closeup of a driver's face noticing people starting across the road and stopping in acknowledgment?" --Anonymous
PAC First impressions of Act 1 1/27/09
- The "clouds" were confusing.
- Foot in street with red color is confusing, red means stop.
- Does red carpet idea carry across cultures?
- Dream scene confusing.
- Why does ped step out and then back instead of continuing on?
- Would like to see police chase for motorist not stopping.
LCC Review of Act 1 2/18/09
- Very confusing for all is when mother steps off/back onto sidewalk. Confusion = red means stop. This is communicating that the woman is very confused and shouldn't be doing what she doing.
- Carpet too rigid of a movement. Not allowing viewers time to catch on to what movement is all about. Consensus is red carpet just gives peds the right to be in the crosswalk. They make no connection to its length as having any meaning. They get it means "special."
Discussion of Act 2
Proposed Revisions
-
Change from 5 lane to 4 lane intersection. -
Bring back the crown -
Add red glow to lanes to stopped lanes to left of pedestrian during crossing. - Hand signal and walk sign are backwards.
-
Bring back the kid! -
Fix initial lane allowance. Currently 2 lanes at start, not 1 lane plus 6 feet. -
Freeze at step off curb and again in lane 2 to show the 6 feet with arrows -> 6 feet! - Beef up the green travel lines and add an arrow to the end to indicate target lane.
-
Perspective addition in ACT II (switching back to perspective of driver who watches pedestrian exit the "buffer" zone before turning. -
Slowing of ped in crosswalk as they approach each new lane, articulating head - looking for approaching traffic.
PAC First impressions of Act 2 1/27/09
- Add another perspective. Too much of bird's eye. Was mentioned that it would be nice to see act end from perspective of driver looking out windshield seeing ped safely to his left while making the turn.
Discussion of Act 3
Proposed Revisions
-
The scene is pretty pastoral for that part of town. -
Add red glow to stopped lanes. -
Cars should stop short of crosswalk, not right up against it. Traffic needs to stop about 10 feet before the crosswalk. -
We're crossing to a school, but there's no school to be seen. -
Speed limit is 20 in a school zone, so we should see a slower progression of traffic. -
Steering wheel is in lane 2, but car is in lane 1. Move the wheel over. -
Maybe cut the first instance of the steering wheel. -
Mark the lane allowance like Act 1 -
Slowing of ped in crosswalk as they approach each new lane, articulating head - looking for approaching traffic.
PAC First impressions of Act 3 1/27/09
- Lane allowance incorrect.
